The family flew in from the US after what the mum called “a loooooong night of travel.” They had a five-year-old with them and no car seat.
They didn’t forget it. Leaving it at home was the right call, and most overseas families don’t realise why until they check.
Why the car seat from home wouldn’t have worked anyway
In Australia, every child car seat has to meet the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1754. A seat bought in the US or Europe usually doesn’t meet it, even if it’s a good seat. The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne puts it plainly: “It is illegal to use an overseas model or restraint that does not meet this standard.”
So a family can carry a car seat all the way across the Pacific and still not be allowed to use it in Sydney.
NSW law also sets out which seat a child needs by age:
- Under 6 months: rear-facing seat
- 6 months to 4 years: rear-facing seat, or forward-facing with an inbuilt harness
- 4 to 7 years: forward-facing seat with an inbuilt harness, or an approved booster
At five years old, this family’s child needed a harnessed seat or an approved booster, meeting the Australian Standard and fitted properly.
Standard taxis work differently. Under NSW rules, a child over 12 months in a taxi can use a booster seat or just a properly adjusted adult seatbelt. That’s allowed, but many parents aren’t comfortable with it, especially with a sleepy five-year-old after a long flight.
What the morning actually looked like
The family booked Sydney Baby Taxi before they flew, and Brendan contacted them before the trip. When they landed, he was “reaching out to me immediately upon my family’s arrival.”
The car seat was already in the car and set up for their child. Every seat in our cars is an Australian-approved restraint, fitted to Australian requirements before pickup, so parents don’t have to fit one themselves in the airport car park.
